Cultuur snuiven! The Cultural season is starting

Cultuur snuiven! The cultural season is getting started in the Netherlands, and here’s all you need to know about it.

It’s been a while. Cultural and creative sectors have been hit incredibly hard by the Covid-19 regulations, for which creative industries have been facing ‘a cultural catastrophe’. All the more is to celebrate for the cultural sector, now that the Netherlands is loosening restrictions bit by bit, and the Dutch cultural season is about to get started. In this blog article, we’ll tell you all there is to know about the Dutch cultural season and how the Dutch celebrate the launch of it.

The annual Uitmarkt event

Every year in the last weekend of August, for 44 years already, de Uitmarkt takes place in Amsterdam. De Uitmarkt marks the national opening of the cultural season of the Netherlands and provides an accessible and inspiring stage for everyone who wants to get acquainted with everything the new season has to offer. This year, the 44th edition takes place on 27, 28 and 29 august at het Museumplein (Museum Square) in Amsterdam. There will be at least three live stage programs, with audience! Ready to feel the buzzing vibe of being part of an audience and enjoying culture together? Make sure to reserve your spot!

What to see at de Uitmarkt?

The good thing about de Uitmarkt is, that there’s many culture categories that are placed in the spotligths. From dance to cabaret and from theatre to magic – it’s all launched at the Uitmarkt. Basically, the Uitmarkt provides you with a sneak peek into what the cultural season of the Netherlands has to offer the coming year. We can’t wait to go cultuur snuiven (‘to sniff culture’, a Dutch way of saying ‘to enjoy culture’)!

Back to school!

Not only the cultural season, but also the academical year is about to begin. The first Monday of September, the 6th this year, is the day that all universities of the Netherlands, from the Universiteit Utrecht to the Erasmus Universiteit in Rotterdam and many others, are opening their doors to students again. The big question is: will students be allowed to go back to school ‘like normal’ again?

Back to normal

Yes! On the 13th of August, het kabinet (the Dutch government) has decided to let go of the 1,5 meter regulation, for which students can go back to school like normal again. Finally! It was about time to let go of the tiny tiny Dutch student rooms, and go back to socializing at school again.

With the academical year and the cultural season starting soon, there’s plenty to look forward to for the Dutch. A new cultural and academical year comes with new inspiration and new resolutions. What are your resolutions? Let us know in the comments below!
